Crafting Techniques Used
Decoupage: Our American Eagle print is applied to the frame using Mod Podge as adhesive Distressing/Antiquing:A white wax is used to prevent paint from adhering to certain areas, creating a chipped, antique look after chalk paint is applied and scraped off Staining:Paint sticks and jumbo craft sticks are stained using Waverly Antique Wax applied with a baby wipe Faux Rust:A rusty look is achieved on small tacks by applying Mod Podge and sprinkling them with cinnamon
Adhesive Techniques:Both hot glue and E6000 adhesive are used for assembling the frame
Project Details
1. Stain paint sticks and jumbo craft sticks front and back with Waverly Antique Wax. Let dry. 2. Create a faux rusty look on small tacks using Mod Podge and cinnamon; let dry completely, then seal with Mod Podge. 3. Assemble the frame: Use jumbo craft sticks and E6000 and hot glue to attach the stained paint sticks to a backing board. 4. Apply the American Eagle grunge print using matte Mod Podge, smoothing out bubbles and wrinkles. Let dry. 5. Attach the frame's sides using E6000 and hot glue. Sand off excess glue. 6. Distress the frame: Apply wax to areas where you want the paint to chip, then apply chalk paint. Remove paint with a spackle knife to create a chipped look. 7. Add a hanger to the back. Pre-drill holes for the tacks and secure them. 8. Glue the "USA" letters onto the frame using a precision glue gun.
Variations
Instead of paint sticks, consider using popsicle sticks, thin wooden dowels, or even twigs for a more rustic look! For the adhesive, wood glue could possibly replace E6000. Alternative distressing methods include sandpaper or a wire brush instead of wax and paint. The print could be replaced with any DDD design! And enhanced with stencils or paint. Finally, different types of small decorative elements could replace the tacks.
