Project Details

The print was initially printed on regular paper, then fussy cut and 

adhered to the wood using decoupage.

Totally Dazzled jewels in blues and aquas were added.  Brown wax was applied to the edges for a vintage look.  A small bow made from Sari fabric and lace was added.

 

The final product is a gorgeous piece of shelf decor for the winter season, with a painted background, jewels, and a small bow, giving it a vintage look.  A metallic Prosecco paint was used for highlights.

Paint Mixing

Sheila began with a pre-mixed background color, but adjusted to her liking. She used three Paint Pixie colors: Blue Java Banana, Starry Night (a dark blue), and Tropical Dream (a lighter blue).  She combined these, adding more of one color or another until she achieved the desired shade, which was a lighter blue that would blend well with the print. 

Fussy Cutting

Sheila used the fussy cutting technique to trim the edges of the printed image, removing some of the bottom florals.  

 

She chose this technique to better blend the print with the painted background, creating a more seamless integration.  

 

The fussy cutting gave the final piece a less rigid, more organic look, allowing the image to appear more integrated with the background.

Adhesion Technique

Sheila first applied a base coat of Saltwater Taffy paint to the wood to ensure good adhesion for the decoupage.  

 

She then ironed the rice paper print onto the painted wood to increase adhesion.  

 

If you do not have an iron, decoupage medium alone would be just fine! The base coat of paint and the use of an iron were additional steps to improve the adhesion of the print to the wood.

 

Final Touches & Key Decorative Elements

Totally Dazzled jewels, primarily in blues and aquas, were added to create sparkle and enhance the color scheme.  

 

Lace, in varying thicknesses, was used to create a small bow, adding a touch of texture and femininity.

 

Brown wax was applied to the edges, softening the harsh lines and adding a vintage, distressed look.

 

These elements worked together to create a cohesive design for home decor that is both elegant and slightly rustic! Shelia transformed this winter-themed print into a piece that will make any home feel cozy, elegant and seasonal.
